Corbett National Park is one of India’s most loved and known wildlife reserves. It is home to one of the largest concentrations of the endangered Royal Bengal tigers. Named after the famous British hunter turned conservationist Col Jim Corbett, the park is spread over a vast 500 square km area, nestled in the foothills of the Kumaon Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Other than the tiger it is inhabited by other wildlife like elephants, sambhars deers, cheetals, crocodiles and about 400 plus species of birds both migratory and resident.

One part of the park opens in October while the core zone of Dhikala opens in the middle of November till June. Other than the safaris in the park which are done on government approved jeeps and small buses (known as canters), it is advisable to get the bookings done much in advance as there is a steady rush of tourists during the season. The weather starts getting cooler from October onwards and it becomes quite cold during December and January and gets quite hot as one progresses into the Indian summers from April onwards till the closure of the park in June. Both seasons provide ample opportunities for wild life spotting as during winters animals usually come out to bask in the sun while in the summers there is a distinctive pattern of heading towards the watering holes for quenching the thirst and cool down dips into the water. A whole lot of wild-life enthusiasts and photographers prefer the summer months as the foliage is much less dense and spotting opportunities become better. Winters presents its own charms of dense forests, wildlife, hordes of migratory birds and the enchanting views of the mist laden Ramganga river that flows through the core area of the park. The park is a mere 6-7hours drive away from New Delhi and is also connected by a railhead. Definitely a must visit for all including individuals, groups and the wild-life enthusiasts!
